The Rise of the Renegades

The Renegades are an international professional esports organisation based in Australia. They were founded in March 2015 and currently have rosters in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, Apex Legends, Rocket League, SMITE, and Paladins

The Renegades first came to prominence in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive after acquiring the former Team Immunity roster. The team quickly became one of the top teams in Oceania, winning multiple tournaments including the Oceanic Qualifier for the ESL One Cologne 2016 Major. In September 2017, the Renegades expanded their operations into North America by acquiring the spot of OpTic Gaming’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team.

The Renegades have seen success in a number of different games over the years. In March 2019, the organisation won the Smite World Championship, taking home a $1 million prize. The team has also had success in Paladins, with their roster winning multiple tournaments including the Hi-Rez Expo 2018 Paladins Premier League.

The Renegades are one of the most successful esports organisations from Oceania and continue to field top-tier teams across a number of different games.

Introduction

In this blog post, we’re going to take a look at the rise of the Renegades organization. We’ll start by looking at how they got their start in esports and some of their early successes. We’ll then move on to their more recent accomplishments, including their ELEAGUE Major Boston 2018 win. Finally, we’ll look at what the future holds for the Renegades and their chances of continued success in the world of esports.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at the rise of the Renegades!

The Renegades were founded in March 2015 by Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles and Hector Rodriguez. MonteCristo is a well-known figure in the esports world, having worked as a commentator and analyst for a variety of different games. Hector Rodriguez is the owner of OpTic Gaming, one of the most successful esports organizations in the world.

The Renegades’ first foray

The Renegades’ first foray into esports was in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. They acquired two North American teams, one being the former iBUYPOWER lineup that was banned due to match-fixing. The other team they acquired was the mixteam Old Guys Club, which consisted of players who were over the age of 30.

The Renegades had immediate success in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, winning a number of tournaments in their first year. This included wins at the ESL ESEA Pro League Seasons 1 and 2, as well as the FACEIT 2015 Stage 3 Finals.

Their Expansion into Rocket League

In January 2016, the Renegades expanded into Rocket League by acquiring the Kings of Urban roster. They would go on to have success in Rocket League as well, winning the Rocket League Championship Series Season 2 in August 2016.

The following year, the Renegades expanded into PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS and Smite. In PUBG, they acquired the Australian team AVANT Gaming. This team would go on to have a lot of success, finishing in the top 3 at a number of tournaments including the PUBG Global Championship 2019 and Starladder Berlin Major 2019.

As for Smite, the Renegades acquired the North American team COGnitive Gaming. This team would go on to win a number of tournaments including the Smite World Championship 2017.

All-female CS

In January 2018, the Renegades made their biggest splash yet by signing an all-female Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team. This team consisted of some of the best female Counter-Strike players in the world, including Katuin “stunna” Cheung and Sam “s0m” Oh.

The all-female Renegades team would go on to have a lot of success, winning the Intel Challenge Katowice 2018 and finishing in the top 4 at the ELEAGUE Boston Major 2018.

The following year, the Renegades would win their first ever major tournament by taking home the ELEAGUE Boston Major 2018 trophy. This was a huge accomplishment for the organization, cementing their place as one of the top esports organizations in the world.

Bright Future

The future looks bright for the Renegades. They have a strong lineup of teams across a variety of different games. They also have the backing of a well-known and successful owner in Hector Rodriguez. With all of this in their favor, it’s safe to say that the Renegades are here to stay and will continue to be a force in the world of esports.
